Tuesday 20th March 2012

JONATHAN WELLS

Having originally decided not to have an overseas player this year, Leigh have announced the signing of Jonathan Wells from Tasmania. At 23 years old, Jonathan has already represented Tasmania at first class level in Sheffield Shield, One Day and Twenty20 Competitions. He also bowls useful medium pace.

He was recently part of the team which saw Tasmania reach the Sheffield Shield Final in Brisbane. However, Tasmania lost to Queensland and Wells was not included in Tasmania's team.

Only a month ago he smashed 121 not out in a one day match against Queensland in Hobart.

It will be Jonathan's first time playing cricket in the UK and he is really looking forward to the experience, and is keen to get involved around the club.

In his first season as skipper at Leigh, Neil Williams said he was thrilled to have a player of that calibre in the team and was sure that he would make an immediate impact. Neil also went on to add that with a young first X1, he should integrate well and was excited about the prospect of leading the team containing such quality.

Having received good reports, Leigh did not hesitate to sign Wells when it was clear that he was avilable for a full season, and that he had a desire to play in one of the best and most competitive standards of club cricket around.

Jon is looking to join his new team mates pre season, and the club would like to wish him well during his time at Leigh.

Wicket keeper batsman Neil Williams returns to Leigh as captain. Having already announced the signings of Adam Hodgkins and Chris Riley, Leigh have also lost several players, Former captain David Dove has retired. Paul Keenan has gone to West Leigh, Tom Foster to Adlington and Dave Dempster to Clifton. Wicket keeper Joe Davies is in London persuing his veterinary studies but will play at Roe Green when time allows. Alex Roussak is in Australia until June whilst his brother Adam is also abroad.
