HM Revenue
and Customs

March 2013
Over the past weeks there has been increased speculation from several sources that HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) are in the process of focusing part of their resources on investigations relating to cricket, and more importantly for our members on the income made by officials. This subject has been discussed many times in the past and will continue to cause much debate.
In light of the recent concerns, the ECB ACO Board has the following observations and recommendation:
HMRC are well known to concentrate on new areas of investigation each year. During the last tax year numerous investigations took place into the tax affairs of coaches and plumbers. It would appear that their attention is slowly becoming drawn to Cricket affairs. It is not the ECB ACO's intention to approach HMRC on any investigation, as this may only serve to heighten their interest. Should an approach be felt in the best interest at a later date, it is the ECB ACO's hopes that this can come from a joint venture with other organisations, for officials or otherwise.
The ECB ACO would like to urge and encourage its members to keep records of their income and expenditure relating to their officiating for each year, if they do not already do so. These records would prove helpful should HMRC make any approach to any individual member.
