ECB Premier League - Lytham take over after Rake deadlock
Saturday 31st May 2014

Overnight leaders, Ormskirk had to be content with a draw at second placed New Brighton. Ormskirk were in trouble at 13-3 but Gary Knight (51) and Simon Kerrigan (37) started a revival which continued with the later order to enable Ian Robinson to declare on 215-9 after 56.4 overs. Rakers' captain, Louis Botes injured a hand whilst fielding and had to bat down the order when New Brighton replied. Another to have been injured whilst fielding was Lancashire's Luke Procter who had the ball go into his eye. He batted with one eye almost closed but only lasted three balls. Upal Fernando hit 40 as the match ended on 178-7.  scorecard

Lytham took advantage of the result at Rake Lane to go top of the table by one point after beating Birkenhead Park who were making their first visit to the Church Road ground. It was a close encounter as first of all Daniel Edwards took 6-71 as Park recovered from an early collapse to end on 159 all out from 53.1 overs. Lytham struggled against the Park attack and were 22-3 at one stage but captain Guy Roberts overcame the threat of Robbie Houghton (5-49) to end with 84* as he and last man Daniel Robson edged home by one wicket with three balls remaining.  scorecard

Wallasey stay fourth despite their defeat at Fleetwood Hesketh who registered their first win of the season. Wallasey were inserted and slumped to 123-6 before Alex Eagles (66*) and stand in skipper David Miles (28*) added 97 to leave them on 220-6d after 51 overs with Steve Gregory taking 3-24 and Ulricht van Duyker, 3-59. In reply, Derek Sykes (64) and Dean Skelton (56) steadied the innings after it was 76-4 with a partnership of 73 before Andrew Watts hit a match winning 41* as Hesketh won by four wickets.  scorecard

Rainhill climb to fifth after an unexpected win at Leigh. Only Hamish Kingston (80*) played with ease as Leigh's other batsmen struggled against Mohammad Aslam who bowled twenty-eight overs unchanged to finish with 6-38 before a sporting declaration by Mattie McKiernan at 161-9 after 55 overs. The visitors were 2-2 and later 92-6 but Waqar Khan (89*) steered Rainhill to a three wicket victory with McKiernan taking 3-39 and Kingston 3-42.  scorecard

The match at Moor Park between reigning champions Northern and former champions Bootle turned out to be a non event as the latter were bowled out for 74 (Tom Sephton 4-16, Stephen Lucas 3-9) to follow the 70 they made at Nantwich on Monday in the Royal London Club Championship. Northern slid to 25-3 before James Cole (16*) and Mark Walling (31*) saw them through with an unbroken partnership of 50. This was Northern's first win against their rivals at Moor Park since 2004. scorecard

Southport and Birkdale's match at Maghull was over before 4:00pm with the visitors taking maximum points. From the moment Mark Waring lost his wicket to the third ball of the game, Maghull's slide began. They collapsed to 71 all out with Andy Warhurst claiming 7-32 in 14.1 overs. Josh Hine (35*) and Adam Phillips (24*) gave the Sandgrounders victory in just ten overs.  scorecard
