ECB Premier League - Ashraf Nawab joins the 1000 wicket club
Saturday 6th May 2017

New Brighton took advantage of Northern and Ormskirk only drawing their matches to go four points clear at the top of the table after a comfortable victory over Southport and Birkdale at Trafalgar Road.

New Brighton won the toss and elected to bat. Martyn Evans went for 18 before captain Mark Rowland added 127 for the second wicket with David While. Rowland was then stumped for 99 whilst attempting to reach his century. The Rakers went on to 271-4 before declaring after 42.5 overs with While unbeaten on 100 (107 balls, 13x4s, 3x6s). Southport and Birkdale have had a bad start to their season and their poor form continued as they were bowled out for 107. The celebrations, though, were not only for the Rakers' victory but also for left arm spinner Ashraf Nawab, whose 4-26 took him to 1000 league wickets in his 400th match. 792 of those have been in 319 ECB Premier League matches.  scorecard  A Nawab's 1000 wickets

Rainhill move into second place after beating Lytham at Church Road where they declared on 203-8 after 51.3 overs with Sam Kershaw hitting 56 and Ross Higham, 54. Arun Danekar (5-25) and Ryan Williams (5-63) then bowled out their hosts for 119.  scorecard

Ormskirk drop to third place after being held at Ainsdale. Ormskirk scored runs for fun as Andy Baybutt (56) and Mike Jones (93) opened with a stand of 146 before Josh Bohannon (79) and George Lavelle (53*) added 119 for the third wicket. Ainsdale opened well as Faiz Fazal (61) and Andy Barlow opened with a stand of 104 but the other batsmen failed to continue the momentum as they finished on 210-7 with Barlow unbeaten on 76. Bohannon took 3-34.  scorecard

Northern drop to fourth after hanging on against Bootle who were 100-6 before recovering to 216-7d with Danny Davies (45) and Will Purser (75*) adding 116 for the seventh wicket. Chris Liptrot (6-51) wiped away Northern's top order as they collapsed to 72-7 but Elliott Bradley (55*) and Tom Jones (31*) took them to 146-7 at the close. Liptrot's haul was the 62nd of five wickets or more of his L&DCC career, taken in 231 matches.  scorecard

There was an exciting finish at the Oval where Colwyn Bay ended up tying with Wallasey. Danny Beaver (44) and Tharindu Kaushal (40) steadied Wallasey's batting as they went on to 205 all out with Ryan Holtby taking 5-63. The Bay were in trouble at 70-5 but Adam Campion's 66 helped them recover but with their last pair at the wicket and scores level, Gareth Goodson was caught and bowled by Kaushal who finished with 7-73.  scorecard

Formby finished as runners up last season but luck has deserted them so far in 2017 and they are bottom of the table after suffering their third defeat. They collapsed from 76-0 to 96-6 against Leigh before declaring at tea on 202-9 after 54 overs with Ollie Sutton top scoring with 46. Finnegan Hulbert took 3-54 and leg spinner, Mattie McKiernan, 5-63 to extend his record against Formby to 29 wickets in 6 matches. Tom Foster (59) and Ross Zelem (47) set Leigh on their way as they eased to victory by four wickets despite Gary Keedy taking 4-56.  scorecard
