ECB Premier League - Lytham's last pair deny Northern their celebrations - Highfield relegated
Saturday 1st September 2018

Lytham's last pair ensured Northern's championship celebrations were put on hold after finishing five runs short of a one wicket victory.

Northern elected to bat and soon lost opener Hayden McCrae for 5, but Liam Grey and Chris Laker then added 163 for the second wicket before Lancashire's Steven Croft trapped Laker lbw for 72. They advanced to 205 before the next wicket sparked a mini collapse which saw six wickets fall for 31 runs, one of which was Grey who was caught and bowled by Josh Holden (5-42) for 101 (153 balls, 11x4s, 1x6), after which Northern declared at 236-8 from 54.4 overs.

Champagne was being put on ice when Lytham slumped to 80-7 but Northern hadn't reckoned on what was going to happen next. Lytham's skipper, Ben Saunders, was joined by Matthew Taaffe and the pair added 106 for the eight wicket before Saunders became of Tom Sephton's seven victims (7-110) after scoring 86 from 66 balls with 13x4s and 3x6s. Taaffe (47) followed at 209-9, leaving Tony Mulligan and Jack Saunders to score the 28 runs needed. They ran out of time though and finished on 232-9 to leave Northern requiring seven points from their last two matches to guarantee winning the ECB Premier League scorecard

Second placed Ormskirk beat Highfield by 143 runs and waited as the result unwound at Moor Park. Choosing to bat first, Ormskirk's Alex Rankin (86) and John Armstrong (67) opened the innings with a stand of 160. This was followed up by Andy Baybutt (38*) and Gary Knight (31*) who took the score to 236-3d after 49 overs. Bottom placed Highfield lost two wickets for 9 and struggled against Scott Lees (4-20) and Ryan Maddock (4-28) before being dismissed for 93 to send them back into the First Division next season.  scorecard

Third placed Formby were asked to bat at Bootle and reached 218-9d after 55 overs with Tim Smithies top scoring with 49 after Chris Liptrot had taken 4-66. Weak batting by Bootle left them fighting for survival as they ended on 190-9 after 58 overs.  scorecard

Adam Shallcross (75) and Tom Foster (50) helped take Leigh to 234-8d after 53 overs against Wallasey for whom Chris Bourne took 6-79. The task was too much for Wallasey as they finished on 179-6, Toby Bulcock taking 3-47.  scorecard

New Brighton and Colwyn Bay started the day just outside the relegation zone and had to be satisfied with a tie at Rake Lane. Colwyn Bay reached 153-2 after winning the toss with George Johansen (62) and Dineth Hewathanthree (51) adding 110 for the third wicket. The dismissal of Hewathanthree began a collapse that saw the last eight wickets fall for 35 runs to leave them all out for 188 after 50.1 overs with Ashraf Nawab taking 5-33. After being 111-3, New Brighton collapsed to 130-8. Ashley Watkins and Tom Horrocks (6*) then added 57 before Watkins (41) was out at 187. One more run was added before Ashraf Nawab tried to hit the ball out of the ground only to be bowled by Paul Jenkins (5-58) and leave the match tied with Adam Campion taking 5-67.  scorecard

Rainford remain in the bottom two despite dismissing mid table Rainhill by nine wickets. They bowled them out for 67 with John Dotters taking 4-29 and Daniel Houghton, 3-21. Paul Farrar (37) and Matt Bailey (25*) saw Rainford home in a match that lasted for 40.4 overs.  scorecard
