Sunday 2nd XI result - Birkenhead Park beat Colwyn Bay with an 'authorised' ineligible player
Sunday 9th September 2018

Today showed yet another instance of the L&DCC Management Committee blatantly ignoring the rules for a rearranged 2nd XI match played on a Sunday.

Rule 7.1.4 clearly on page 49 states:

"In a Sunday 2nd XI rearranged match, only players who have played more than 50% 2nd XI (or lower) league matches for their club during the previous eleven consecutive matches will be eligible. This rolling period may include part of the previous season. . . . If the team  which is not responsible for the rearrangement has a problem with player eligibility it should refer the matter to the Management Committee for resolution before playing the match."

The player in question was Park's Khalid Wahbi. He played in the 1st XI match at Prestatyn on 18/08/2018 and his previous ten league matches were in the 1st XI in 2017.

There is no timescale in the above rule save that matches in the previous season may be taken into consideration, and despite Park supposedly having the 'OK' from the Management Committee's Secretary, the decision clearly contravened the above rule.

The Secretary has since defended his decision by saying "it only applies to the previous 12 months". But the rule doesn't say that, it says 'part of the previous season'. What the rule says or is intended to say are two different things. You have to act on what is printed in the rules as they are now, not what you think they should be.

He clearly realises he's made a massive error, again, and is desperately trying to bluff his way out.

With one club threatening legal action if the decision isn't over turned, do we need this? How hard is it to implement a simple rule?

Colwyn Bay elected to bat and saw Khalid Wahbi bowl unchanged to finish with figure of 28.3-10-63-6 in an all out total of 134 from 56.3 overs.

Birkenhead Park won the match by four wickets after being 4-4. Khalid Wahbi hit 51 and added 86 for the fifth wicket with Doug Pyrke (54). Mike Jennings took 4-47 for the Bay.

COLWYN BAY 134 (56.3 overs) (45 overs = 105-7) (L Russell 39, J Jones 17; Khalid Wahbi 6-63, Pyrke 3-41)
v BIRKENHEAD PARK 135-6 (36.5) (Pyrke 54, Khalid Wahbi 51; Jennings 4-47)

Result: Birkenhead Park won by 4 wickets
Toss: Colwyn Bay
Points: Colwyn Bay (1 bat pt + 3 bowl pts), Birkenhead Park (20 pts + 5 bowl pts)
scorecard

The above result affects Colwyn Bay's bid for promotion as they compete with Highfield for the runners up spot, if not as champions. The pair meet at Penrhyn Avenue next Saturday.

At the other end of the table, the result lifts Park (193 pts) off the bottom to be replaced Maghull (192 pts) and puts them closer to Rainhill (200 pts), Leigh (203 pts) and Northop Hall (206 pts).
