ECB Premier Division - Northern take a four point lead after beating Wallasey
Saturday 1st May 2021

Northern take an early four point at the top of the table following their comfortable win by seven wickets against Wallasey at Moor Park where the visitors haven't won since 2014. The visitors opted to bat and lost last week's centurian, opener Jamie Crawley, for a nine ball duck. Who said cricket is a great leveller? With the exception of fellow opener, Danny Beaver who made 38, the Wallasey batsmen struggled as they were bowled out for 100 in 42.2 overs with Liam Grey and Ryan Maddock each taking four wickets. Jack Boardman hit an unbeaten 59 to guide the home team to victory after 26 overs.  scorecard

Ormskirk are one of two teams on 45 pts after sacrificing the chance of 25 by choosing to field after winning the toss against Leigh. Leigh were reduced to 103-6 and that included 79 from 58 balls with 13x4s and 2x6s by Mattie McKiernan. Finnegan Hulbert hit 40 as Leigh rallied to 170 all out after 33.4 overs. In reply, Ormskirk lost half of their side for 124 but opener Taylor Cornall hit 71 not out as they got home by five wickets.  scorecard

Rainhill are also on 45 pts after bowling out Wigan for 92 with three wickets apiece for Jamie Harrison (3-5), Peter Kelly (3-19) and Liam O'Toole (3-43). Earlier, James Clarke (41) and Tyler McGladdery (79) opened with a stand of 97, and with Sam Kershaw adding 68 not out, Rainhill were able to declare at 222-3 from 52 overs.  scorecard

New Brighton are two points behind in fourth place after a 97 run triumph over newly promoted Sefton Park. The Rakers recovered from 7-2 but struggled to 113-7 before finally reaching 171 in 46.5 overs with Ashley Watkins hitting 35 not out. Sefton Park were immediately in trouble. The first five wickets fell for 29 before Scott Aitchison's 25 took them to a final total of 74.  scorecard

Formby went to Wadham Road where they had recorded only one victory in nine previous visits in the ECB Premier League. They were inserted by Neil Williams and soon lost opener Callum Turner, who was bowled by former Lytham bowler, Toby Lester, for 7. Wicket keeper, and now captain, James Seward (69), Ollie Sutton (45) and Sam Oldham (42) laid the foundation for Formby to declare on 235-8 after 59.2 overs, Scott Butterworth taking 4-67. As it happened, Formby could have declared after 55 overs as Bootle only used 39.2 in being bowled out for 119. Opener Will Hale hit 56 but of the other batsmen, only Williams reached double figures with US citizen Saad Humayun taking 5-18 and Sam Ellis 3-43.  scorecard

Orrell Red Triangle started their season badly last week with a defeat against Rainhill but they made up for that today by beating Southport and Birkdale at Trafalgar Road. The Sandgrounders chose to bat and opened with 41 for the first wicket but collapsed to 103 all out with Josh Fallows taking 4-44. Ammer Mizra (46*) and Andy Baybutt (36*) added 45 to take Orrell to a win by eight wickets and maximum points.  scorecard
