ECB Premier League - Caunce and Armstrong take champions to victory

ECB Premier League champions Ormskirk began the defence of their title with a comprehensive win over Wallasey on a damp opening day in the Liverpool Competition. The Wirral outfit were skittled for just 111 off 53.5 overs with Nicky Caunce (5-22) and Dane Currency (3-40) doing the damage. Opener John Armstrong (pictured left) then struck an unbeaten 71 as the visitors strolled to a nine wicket win.  scorecard

Former Lancashire spinner Gary Keedy rolled back the years at Moor Park taking 5-44 off 25 overs to restrict Northern to 174 all out in their drawn match with Formby. The hosts batted for 69.3 overs leaving Ian Cockbain’s side just 23 overs to reach the target and they came close as Patrick Pisel (56) and Stephen Parry (61*) took them to 154-4 at the close.  scorecard

An opening partnership of 183 between David Snellgrove (107, 122 balls, 13x4s, 1x6) and skipper Craig Prince (94) allowed Bootle to declare on 220-8 in their rain affected match with New Brighton at Wadham Road. Ashraf Nawab (4-35) and David While (3-35) picked up late wickets for the away side who settled for the draw after closing on 164-7. Khurram Hussain top scored with 57 on his début.  scorecard

Southport and Birkdale picked up an opening day win with an impressive performance at Rainhill. Opener Joseph Kennedy hit 94 as the home side declared on 194-5 off 44 overs. Adam Phillips led the Sandgrounder's run chase with a brilliant 101 (96 balls, 11x4s, 3x6s) as they reached the target in the 41st over for the loss of six wickets. Lytham got off to a winning start with a 41 run victory over Birkenhead Park. Thomas Hessey (51) top scored as the Fylde side reached 192-7 off 46.1 overs. Rob Houghton (3-60) and Khalid Wahbi (3-40) took three wickets apiece for Park who were dismissed for 151. Anthony Mulligan (5-45) and Luke Williams (3-52) were the stand out bowlers.  scorecard

Lancashire’s Karl Brown (90) top scored for Leigh who declared on 222-8 in their match at Highfield. Adam Shallcross also hit 69 for the visitors while Sam Rotherham (3-58) was the pick of the Highfield bowlers. Jahangir Mirza became the day’s third century maker as his unbeaten 107 (129 balls, 13x4s, 1x6) allowed the hosts to reach 188-7 in a drawn game.  scorecard
