ECB Premier League - Caunce and Currency keep the champions on top
Jamie Bowman - Saturday 16th May 2015

Ormskirk's bid to become the first side since 2007 to retain the ECB Premier League is gathering pace after a five wicket win over Birkenhead Park. Electing to bat, Park recovered from a dreadful start thanks to 82 from Sri Lankan Ian Daniel which helped them reach 171 all out off 52.1 overs. Nicky Caunce (5-33) and Dane Currency (4-56) were both in the wickets for the hosts who sealed the win in the 47th over after 71 from opener John Armstrong.  scorecard

New Brighton are 15 points behind Ormskirk in second place, following a hard fought win over Rainhill. Put into bat, the visitors were soon struggling with the bowling of the irrepressible Mohammad Aslam who took 7-55 off 28 overs. Only Lancashire pro Luke Procter prospered and his 54 proved vital as New Brighton declared on 168-9 off 55 overs. Rainhill's chase was led by opener Joseph Kennedy (62) but when he was run out with the score 106-5, there was no way back and the hosts were eventually dismissed for 138. Ashraf Nawab finished with 6-54.  scorecard

Lytham are third courtesy of a fine batting performance against Leigh at Church Road. Thomas Hessey (72) and Dominic O’Brien (65) shared a second wicket partnership of 104 as the home side amassed a score of 260-4 off 48.4 overs. Leigh produced a thrilling run chase in response, based around the efforts of Adam Shallcross, who had reached 117 off 96 balls (19x4s, 1x6) when he was the last man out with his side 33 runs short. Anthony Mulligan (4-59) and Daniel Edwards (4-70) were the pick of the bowlers.  scorecard

Bootle finally picked up their first win of the season with a four wicket victory over Formby despite Will Purser going for thirteen his first over. Opener Patrick Pisel hit 77 before some useful lower order runs from Jack Vale (44) helped Ian Cockbain's Formby side reach 218-9d off 55 overs. Former Lancashire spinner Gary Keedy made life hard for the Bootle top order before skipper Craig Prince (46) and Greg Butterworth (64*) put on 100 for the sixth wicket to steer the game towards the hosts. Keedy finished with 4-65 from 21.1 overs.  scorecard

Northern travelled to promoted Highfield and came away with their first win of the season after a stunning bowling performance from Stephen Cole. Earlier, Liam Grey (54) and John Dotters (41) helped the Crosby outfit bat on after tea and reach 166-9d off 59.5 overs with Jahangir Mirza (4-32) and Rob Halliwell (3-43) in the wickets. Cole, who was injured for the majority of last season, then showed just why he was such a big miss for Northern, taking 5-11 off nine overs as the hosts crumbled to 33 all out off 17.4 overs. Ryan Maddock took 3-19.  scorecard

Wallasey followed up last night’s NatWest CLUB T20 win against Sefton Park by recording their first league victory of the season against Southport and Birkdale. Electing to bat, the Sandgrounders never got to grips with the bowling of Lahiru Lakmal who finished with figures of 6-55 off his 20.4 overs. Neil Cross (4-25) took the other wickets to fall as the hosts were skittled for 128 in 45.4 overs. Josh Bohannon top scored with 44 and then took 4-15 to round off an excellent individual performance but half centuries from Lakmal (50) and Jack Leckey (52*) in a century partnership ensured a five wicket win for the Wirral side.  scorecard
