ECB Premier League - Sandgrounders have the last laugh
Saturday 30th May 2015

Southport and Birkdale had the last laugh against leaders New Brighton. Playing on the pitch that Lancashire had used against Derbyshire earlier in the week, the Sandgrounders feared they would struggle against the Rakers' spinner, Ashraf Nawab. This they did as they collapsed to 89-8 (Josh Bohannon 37) after electing to bat. Wicket keeper James McCombie hit a valuable unbeaten 40 to take them to 132 with Nawab finishing with 7-45. At 75-1 after 20.4 overs, New Brighton looked as if they were on their way to a comfortable victory but a collapse took them to 97-6. Three wickets then fell at 118 before they were dismissed for 129 with Sandgrounders' captain, Chris Firth, taking 4-68, Chris Brownlow, 3-17 and Josh Bohannon, 3-27.  scorecard

Ormskirk went back to the top of the table after beating Leigh by 58 runs at Brook Lane. They struggled against the Leigh bowling but recovered from 137-7 to be 173-8 from 53 overs at tea. Ormskirk batted on for a further two overs before Matty Glayzer (72) declared on 190-8d with Richard Dempster taking 3-42 and Mattie McKiernan, 3-52. Openers Ross Zelem (60) and Hedley Molyneux (25) began Leigh's reply with a partnership of 64 but that was the start of a disaster where no other batsmen reached double figures as they crumbled to 132 all out with Liam Hurt taking 55-1 and Dane Currency, 3-40.  scorecard

Formby remain in third place despite only drawing at Rainhill. They faced 59.4 overs, 29.4 of them from Mohammad Aslam (4-43), before declaring at 154-8. Rainhill started badly, being 8-3, all to Alex Lines. Mohammad Aslam (50) and Mike Rotheram (36) then added 92 for the fourth wicket before both fell lbw to Jack Vale (3-13). Following their dismissal, Rainhill collapsed to 129-9 before Simon Brown and Matthew Dale played out the final three overs as they drop to the foot of the table.  scorecard

Fourth placed Birkenhead Park raced to 251-5d in 49 overs against Wallasey at the Oval. Ian Daniel followed last Sunday's Cheshire Cup century with another one before he was stumped by Jack Leckey for 120 from 103 balls with 7x4s and 8x6s. Given 62 overs to reply, Wallasey were in trouble at 139-7 but Mark Williams (22*) and Andrew Ward (54*) added 76 to leave them on 215-7 at the close with Rob Houghton taking 3-79.  scorecard

Highfield started the day at the foot of the table but a third win in their five visits to Wadham Road, lifts them up a place. They were in trouble at 35-4 but Michael Gaskell (42) and Joel Welsby (69) added 58 on the way to a respectable 171, Scott Butterworth (3-24) and Will Purser (3-46). Chris Liptrot (6-64) and Rob Halliwell (4-27) then bundled out Bootle for 121 after 33.3 overs.  scorecard

The remaining match ended in a draw as Lytham's last pair hung on against Northern at Church Road. The in form Steve Lucas (72) and Liam Grey (35) opened Northern's innings with a partnership of 103. Davy Smith added 47* before James Cole declared on 220-5d after 40.4 overs. A Northern victory looked on the cards when they reduced the home side to 68-7 but Ben Saunders (59*) and Dan Edwards (54) steered them to 177-9 at the close.  scorecard
