ECB Premier League - New Brighton extend lead after Bootle's last pair hold Ormskirk
Saturday 13th June 2015

New Brighton opened up a twenty-two point lead after rescuing victory from the jaws of defeat at Formby. The home side struggled against the spin of Ashraf Nawab (5-51) and David While (4-50) and were dismissed for 147, Stephen Parry top scoring with 58 and Jude Mahadanaarachchi, 25. In reply, it was the Rakers' turn to struggle against spin as they collapsed from 100-4 to 128-9 but Mark Hale and Andy Evans kept their heads to take New Brighton to a one wicket victory despite Parry taking 5-64 and Patrick Pisel, 3-18.  scorecard

At Wadham Road, Ormskirk lost opener John Armstrong cheaply, being adjudicated lbw for 8. The dismissals of Andy Baybutt (1) and Mike Jones (30) took them to 53-3 but Ian Robinson and captain Matty Glayzer then added 148 before the former was run out for 73. Glayzer was in sight of his eighth century when he was given out lbw to former Ormskirk captain, David Snellgrove. His dismissal brought a declaration at 237-6 after 51.1 overs. Steady batting took Bootle within range of their target but when the ninth wicket fell at 211, Chris Cunningham and Chris Stenhouse batted out the remaining thirteen balls to leave them on 225-9.  scorecard

Leigh move up three places to fourth after beating Wallasey by four wickets at the Oval. At 175-3 after 40.4 overs (Greg Beaver 88), the home side looked set for a large total but they collapsed to 213 all out with Richard Dempster taking 4-58 and Mattie McKiernan, 4-33. Hedley Molyneux's 57 included a variety of shots as Leigh eased home by four wickets.  scorecard

Northern could have declared after 55 overs (156-8) and gained two extra points but James Cole decided to bat on for another 2.2 overs to see them 158 all out against Birkenhead Park. Robbie Houghton's 5-63 took his career total to 959 wickets. The total was more than enough as Park were skittled for 79 with Tom Sephton taking 4-21, Ryan Maddock 3-13 and Liam Grey 3-29.  scorecard

After winning their last two matches, Highfield were on the wrong end of the result against Southport and Birkdale at Billinge Road. Mike Farrell (59) top scored as Highfield were dismissed for 140 with Scott Lees (4-34) and Ian Sutcliffe (3-26) amongst the wickets. Southport struggled in reply after collapsing from 82-1 to 133-8 before crawling over the line by two wickets.  scorecard

Down at the bottom, Rainhill's fight for survival continues. They declared on 259-9 after 50 overs at Lytham, a total three runs short of their highest score in the L&DCC made at Northern last season. They lost their openers for 0 but Phil Veacock (76) set them on their way. They lost three wickets for five runs to leave them on 156-6 but the last four wickets added 103. Tony Mulligan took 4-70 and Dan Robson, 3-46. Lytham's Tom Hessey (11)  and Dom O'Brien (0) went cheaply before captain Guy Roberts steadied the batting, adding 118 for the third wicket with opener Will Hale (85). The home side reached the last over needing eleven to win with four wickets standing and Roberts on 93. He hit a boundary and was then dismissed for 97 from 149 balls with 13x4s. Lytham needed three run from two balls and won with a ball to spare to leave their visitors twenty-one points adrift at the foot of the table. scorecard
