Obituary - Rheinhallt (Rene) Edward Clayton
Thursday 8th October 2015

It is with sadness that Colwyn Bay Cricket Club announces the sudden passing today of former player and groundsman, Rheinhallt (Rene) Edward Clayton. He was 80 years old.

Born in Colwyn Bay on 9th June 1935, Rene played his first match for the Penrhyn Avenue club in 1948.

He served his National Service (1953-55) in the Army Catering Corps in Germany.

On completion, he returned to Colwyn Bay before representing Glamorgan in the Second Eleven Championship during 1959 and 1960.

Rene was back at Colwyn Bay CC in 1961 but then left the next season to become player/groundsman at Llandudno CC, where he remained until 1970.

A vacancy for a full time groundsman arose at Penrhyn Avenue and Rene returned to his roots as player/groundsman for the 1971 season.

He retired from playing at the age of 61 having played during the Bay's first season in the Liverpool Competition (1996).

After playing, Rene continued as groundsman at Penrhyn Avenue until he retired in 2000.

Friends and colleagues offer their condolences to Rene's family and Colwyn Bay Cricket Club.
