Only two games survived Saturdayís downpours in the First Division of the MI Dental Liverpool Competition but Wiganís cricketers will not be complaining after their hard-fought draw at Maghull helped them replace Burscough at the top of the table.
But it could well have been so much better for Aaron Redmondís men without a gritty eighth-wicket stand between Liam Johnson, who made 41, and Mohammed Nawaz, who finished the game on 44 not out, secured a morale-boosting draw for the basement side.
In the first innings of the game Redmond made 103 off 109 balls in his sideís 238 all out off 49.1 overs, but Maghullís Jack Wrigglesworth did sterling work for the second week on the trot by taking 7-96 to keep the visitorsí score in some sort of check.
The home side replied with 189-8, Ryan Parry taking 4-42.
The only middle tier side celebrating a victory on Saturday evening were Southport and Birkdale, who benefited from Sefton Coastís benign micro-climate to beat Northop Hall by five wickets, thereby ending a four-match losing streak.
Jack Baybutt took 3-20 and S&B skipper Chris Firth 3-5 as the visitors were bowled out for 110, a small total that would still have been around 30 too many for the Trafalgar Road side a few weeks ago.
However, Adam Phillips made 36 not out and anchored his teamís pursuit of a target which was reached in 32.5 overs, despite James Hurlinís 4-38. The 20-point win takes S&B up from eleventh to eighth in the table with eight games played.
