ECB Premier League - Northern gamble pays off at Moor Park

The start at Moor Park was delayed and Northern's captain, James Cole, gambled and backed his bowlers by declaring after 49 overs with only 131-7 on the board after they had struggled against Wigan's Vinay Choudhary, whose 5-37 was from twenty-four overs. In reply, Wigan collapsed to 62-7. After 24 from Patrick Howley, John Richardson (28) and Josh Boyden (18*) took the score to 123-9. With two runs needed for victory, Edward Hurst was trapped lbw by Liam Grey to give Northern victory by one run with Tom Sephton taking 6-56 and Grey, 4-29.  scorecard

Leigh hang onto second place despite losing at Formby. Saad Humayun took 4-29 as Leigh collapsed from 90-4 to 117 all out in the space of ten overs. Calum Turner hit 47 with Formby easing to 121-2 in 18.1 overs.  scorecard

Ormskirk stormed back at Brook Lane after last week's defeat at Wigan. Today they faced third placed Rainhill. Following Tyler McGladdery's dismissal for 80 at 161-5, David Atkinson (60*) and Ben Edmundson (23*) added an unbroken 59 before Rainhill declared at 220-5 after 44.2 overs. Ormskirk lost Alex Rankin for 3 but then brother Robert joined opener Tyler Cornall. The pair batted for 38.1 overs adding an unbroken 213 for the second wicket with Cornall ending four short of a century, 96* (122 balls, 11x4s) and Robert Rankin registering his maiden century, 107* (120 balls, 14x4s, 3x6s) to give Ormskirk a win by nine wickets.  scorecard

Sefton Park fought their way to 218 in 48 overs at Wallasey with Kemar Smith hitting 87 and Danny Beaver taking 4-19. Sumit Ruikar hit 55 in reply before being lbw to Mark Chappell (3-44) as Wallasey won by three wickets.  scorecard

Southport and Birkdale are still in the bottom two despite beating New Brighton comfortably at Trafalgar Road. The Rakers slumped to 96-7 but recovered to 159 all out, David While, 44. Isaac Lea and JJ Fielding (36) opened with 58 for the Sandgrounders, and after Jack Stanley had gone for 13, Lea (67*) and Dinuka Dilshan (42*) took them to victory with an unbroken partnership of 72.  scorecard
