The final weeks draw near as teams scrap for promotion or against relegation
Monday 6th September 2021

ECB PREMIER LEAGUE

Northern (346 pts), who have led the ECB Premier League table since the second week, require twelve points from the last two matches of the season to be crowned champions for 2021.

Their matches are at Moor Park against ninth placed New Brighton and Orrell Red Triangle who are eighth. They could be champions on Saturday if second placed Wallasey (307 pts) fail to win.

Wallasey are also at home, against fourth placed Rainhill (244 pts) on Saturday and seventh placed Wigan (216 pts) the week after.

Leigh (291 pts) are in third place with matches at home to Wigan (216 pts) and eleventh placed Southport and Birkdale (151 pts) who might know their destiny when they travel to Beech Walk.

At the bottom of the table, Sefton Park's defeat by Leigh last Saturday condemned them to a return to the First Division next season.

A win for Southport and Birkdale at Sefton Park on Saturday will boost their chances of survival and they will be checking the score from Wadham Road at regular intervals where tenth placed Bootle (173 pts) face Ormskirk.

Who would have forecast at the beginning of the season that Bootle would have been hanging on by their finger nails for ECB Premier League survival when we reached the last two matches of the season? Their worst position for many a long year.

FIRST DIVISION

The First Division has seen three leaders during the season. Firstly, Highfield were there for eleven weeks but, after missing the injured Chris Liptrot, are now seventh, Ainsdale took over for two weeks and are now fifth before Newton le Willows took the lead, a position they have held for seven weeks.

Newton le Willows (311 pts) have a 27 point lead from Birkenhead Park who have climbed from seventh the second following a string of four wins.

Newton le Willows face Lytham and Rainford at Crow Lane East.

Lytham were bottom of the table after nine matches but have climbed to fourth following the acquisition of Zia ur Rehman, who seems to be taking wickets for fun after bowling at the same end all afternoon. He took 9-36 against Ainsdale on Saturday.

After being next to bottom after four matches, Rainford have climbed to third place, four points behind Birkenhead Park but have only won three away matches all season, however,  two of them form part of their run of four wins in five matches in recent weeks.

Mathematically any two of Newton le Willows, Birkenhead Park, Rainford, Lytham and Ainsdale could be promoted to the ECB Premier League.

On paper, Birkenhead Park have the easier of run ins and could extend their winning streak following home matches against already relegated St Helens Town and relegation candidates, Old Xaverians. Can Park pip Newton le Willows to the title on the last Saturday? Can Birkenhead Park win the First Division and send Old Xaverians down to the Second Division on the same day? Watch this space.

SECOND DIVISION

Following the Management Committee's refusal to accept 'applications' after precedents had been set with Birkenhead Park, Old Xaverians and Spring View, there still remains eleven clubs in the Second Division. One application was from a club whose ground and facilities are perfectly acceptable for the Liverpool and District Cricket Competition and in fact better than some of the clubs already in it. How they would love to get away from the manufactured 40 over cricket (with win or lose and fielding circles and where every match is like a knockout fixture) that they have to endure at the moment and play good old 'time' cricket.

Caldy (313 pts) are hoping their one match advantage over second placed Spring View (311 pts) will work in their favour. They face Wavertree away on Saturday and then Southport Trinity at Paton Field on the last day whilst Spring View wait a week before their final match at Prestatyn. Who dreamt up that fixture for the last day? If Caldy take 24 pts or more against Wavertree on Saturday, the title is theirs.

Having said that, Maghull's dreams of promotion aren't over as they travel to Sutton and Parkfield Liscard. Wins there and none for Caldy and Spring View, could send the title to Maghull.

Southport Trinity's hopes of promotion have vanished after failing to register a win in their last three matches.

With only one match remaining and out of reach of Alder, Norley Hall are unofficial holders of the 'wooden spoon'.
